Internship creates a unique opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to a student in real field. Through this, students can gain real experience about real business environment. Besides, during internship students realize existing business situation and have the opportunity to solve problems using various analytical tools.
Currently, the banking system is an integral part of our economic system. Modern trade and business without suitable banking service is virtually impossible. In fact, the wellness of a country’s economy is directly related to its banking system’s stiffness. Modern banks play an important role in national economic development. In particular, banks provide necessary financing to implement developmental programs.
Dutch–Bangla Bank PLC (DBBL) is basically a public limited company, which is incorporated in Bangladesh as per Company Act 1994. At the same time, the Bank Company Act 1991 (including later amendments) and Bangladesh Bank Ordinance 1972 conducted banking activities. “The word “Dutch” here indicates that it is a joint venture based organization, where the Dutch partnership is.”
Background of the Report
Bangladesh’s economy is one of the world’s shortest developed economies. As a main reason for this, the underdeveloped banking system can be considered. However, modern banking system plays a very important role in the economic development of a country. In recent years, global banking sector control relaxation, technical development and globalization have led to a huge change. This has also noted significant changes in the national economy.
The current world is changing rapidly in dealing with the challenges of competitive free market economy. The importance of skilled management and trained people is increasing day by day. Bangladesh is not beyond this trend either. Although Bangladesh’s banking sector is currently facing various challenges, its future potential is bright.
Economics and banking is basically the center of all economic activities in a country. From this reality, internship is considered one of the most effective means of gaining real knowledge for students.
Objective of the Report
The main purpose of this report is to meet the partial demand of the ‘Practical Orientation’ course in the bank. Besides, the main objectives of this Practical Orientation Program are:
- Meeting partial conditions of the 4th term of the BBA program
- To achieve real experience in banking activities
- Get acquainted with the bank’s work environment
- Theoretical knowledge apply in real case
- Monitoring and analyzing specific branches and overall banking activities
- Take the idea of the daily activities of the administrative banking system
- Banker–analyze customer relationship
- Gaining knowledge about foreign trade
- Take the idea about loans and advance activities
- To achieve real experience about General Banking activities
Methodology
Both primary and secondary references have been used to make the report meaningful and acceptable.

- Review of important documents provided by relevant officials

Besides, monitoring banking activities for research, discussions with officials, file studies and desk-based work for about 3 months has been completed.
A precise process has been followed to complete this study. The process was as follows:
- Monitoring the banking activities of each department.
- Directly discuss with relevant officials and employees.
- Read various files and documents.
- Deskwork: Working on the desk of almost all necessary activities for the duration of about 2.5 months.

Dutch–Bangla Bank PLC started its journey as the first European joint venture-based private commercial bank of Bangladesh in 1995. Mr. M. Local entrepreneurs led by Sahabuddin Ahmed established the bank in partnership with the Dutch Development Financing Organization FMO.

General Banking Activities of Dutch Bangla Bank PLC
General banking activities begin by opening customer account. When a customer opens account in the bank, a legal relationship between the bank and the customer is formed, which is governed according to the Agreement Act, 1872. So, right customer selection plays a very important role for a bank at the beginning. In reality, many types of fraud and fraud occurs through opening accounts. That’s why Dutch-Bangla Bank takes the highest precautions in opening the PLC account and strictly follows KYC and other regulatory instructions. This enables the bank to ensure safe and transparent general banking services.
Customer Perception of Dutch-Bangla Bank PLC
A questionnaire is created to understand their attitude towards customers’ views, behavior and services offered by the bank. This study was discussed directly with customers through question-based survey management as well as interviews. Dutch-Bangla Bank PLC has long been focusing on improving the quality of service. In that series, the bank set the ambitious goal of becoming the top private commercial bank of Bangladesh a few years ago.
To achieve this goal, the bank is currently conducting extensive reform activities and is specializing in increasing quality of service. The survey asked customers how they learned about the related branch, why they chose this bank and whether they have calculated here. Those who have accounted also evaluated the level of satisfaction with the quality of service from them.
Besides, the opening process of account opening in many banks is complicated and timely, opinions are taken to customers about the opening process of Dutch-Bangla Bank account. At the same time, the bank’s fees and service charges are also questioned whether the bank’s fees are reasonable compared to other banks. Finally, the topic of customers’ ideas and satisfaction about banking services, including credit card, ATM booth, modern software, is analyzed.
This analysis suggests that Dutch-Bangla Bank is trying to hold a strong position through the quality of PLC service, technical development and customer satisfaction.
Findings of the Internship Report
Some important searches have been identified by analyzing complete research. Direct discussions with officials of Dutch-Bangla Bank PLC, in particular, played an important role in determining these findings. The main results are presented below –
1) First, as a commercial bank, the Dutch-Bangla Bank PLC still mainly follows traditional banking methods. The bank still focuses on the productive view. Besides, the wide branch network and in some cases the skill deficit of staff is creating obstacles to implement effective marketing-oriented banking.
2) But the positive side is that the investment activities of Dutch-Bangla Bank PLC have significantly increased in recent years. This has also strengthened the possibility of increasing bank income and profit, which is a good sign for the bank.
3) On the other hand, due to the inefficient distribution of resources, a significant amount of sports loans in the bank has been created, which is a challenge for overall financial stability.
4) In some cases, influential pressure groups intervene during loan approval, which weaken risk management.
5) Besides, the lack of financial responsibility among many borrowers can be noticed. As a result, they spend in other sectors without using money in productive work after taking loans, which causes failure to recover loans in future.
6) Not getting enough, updated and accurate information from management information (MIS) has been identified as a significant limit.
7) Positively, Dutch-Bangla Bank PLC gives considerable importance to social welfare activities and plays an active role in corporate social responsibility activities.
8) The bank offers a variety of loans, such as stuff loan and agricultural loan, which is helpful in meeting the needs of customers of certain classes.
9) Dutch-Bangla Bank also collects and manages PLC Prize bonds as part of investment, considered a safe investment medium.
Conclusion
Dutch-Bangla Bank PLC is one of the largest commercial banks in Bangladesh, playing a significant role in both public and private sectors. With the development of industrial sector, the bank is making an active contribution to the country’s overall economic progress. At the same time, the bank is providing all kinds of banking services that are prevailing in addition to providing some specialized loan activities, which are helping in different sectors of the economy.
Besides, research observations show that the bank’s profitability is in a relatively satisfactory position, as income fluctuations are not very significant. Besides, during the research period, the bank has introduced some new branches, which indicate a positive direction of its expansion and growth. That’s why the overall activities and performance of Dutch-Bangla Bank PLC as a comparative new bank is commendable.
However, if the bank takes more effective steps to control the future expenses and is able to overcome some existing limitations, it can create a strong position among the first row banks of Bangladesh.
Finally, each organization has some strong aspects and some limitations. The positive aspects of the Dutch-Bangla Bank PLC are much more important than the negative side. Besides, the way the bank management authorities are working to reach the top of development, the bank’s more significant progress is expected in the near future.
