1. Overview of Technical University of Munich
Technical University of Munich (TUM) is a leading government research university located in Munich, Germany. On April 12, 1868, King Ludwig II of Bavaria founded the company called “New Polytechnic School” to strengthen scientific and technical education and help in industrial development. Karl Max von Bauernfeind was the first director.
In the first year of its establishment, about 350 students received education from 24 professors and 21 lecturers. TUM has been an important international university for over 150 years. Currently it is known for education and research in various fields such as Engineering, Computer Science, Natural Sciences, Medicine, Architecture, Management and Social Sciences.
Currently, TUM has 51,954 students. Of these, 45% of international students, who came from about 140 countries? The University currently operates 177 Degree Programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. Besides, there is a wide range of opportunities for doctoral education and research. TUM activities are expanded in various places including Munich, Garching, Freising, Heilbronn and Straubing.
The university’s strong research environment includes 7 Cluster of Excellence, more than 10,000 research publications a year and more than 1,200 completed doctorates in 2024/25 academic year. Many prominent scientists, entrepreneurs and Nobel Prize winners from TUM have been created.
According to QS World University Rankings 2027, TUM is the 25th position in the world and 1st in Germany. This position reflects the strong reputation of TUM in international education, research and academic field.
